 Charla Colaw's Online Gallery
featuring Robert Wood (1889-1979)

Welcome

Faery of the Forest

Welcome to my tribute to Robert Wood, the most reproduced Master in the world.  With tens of thousands of landscapes and seascapes to his credit, he is unsurpassed in his ability to draw the viewer completely into the scene.  Robert preferred to paint from nature herself, rather than paint from a photograph. He painted his favorite places. Nearly every American today has seen his work while growing up, if not on their own wall, then that of a friend or relative. Robert Wood's prints and original paintings are very collectible, and are bought and sold daily at eBay.

Come take a look, friend, and see for yourself!

I have received lots of help from those who knew Robert Wood, as well as those who love his art. I'd like to thank two of them. First, I'd like to acknowledge Mr. Merlin Moore, who has provided personal material and photographs in an effort to help preserve the marvelous legacy of Robert Wood. Thanks, Merlin. You are a guardian angel to this site.

I would also like to offer my gratitude to Violet Sigoloff Flume, whose book "The Last Mountain", tells the story of Robert Wood's life, and from same book many of these images were scanned (with permission). Thanks, Violet, you're the best. - Charla Colaw

How to tell an ORIGINAL PAINTING from a PRINT?

I get many contacts about how to tell an original Robert Wood. First, carefully remove the frame. Look on the lower front edge for printed words. Any printed words would indicate a print. Some were even printed on canvas, and people often mistake them for originals. When in doubt, have it appraised. Many of Robert Woods paintings were licensed for reproduction by the Donald Art Company, and the letters D.A.C. in fine print on the edge indicates these.

New Robert Wood prints can be obtained at www.postergallery.com

Many of his original paintings are signed on the back, and stamped with "Reproduction Rights Retained by Artist". Also note that Robert Wood has signed as "Trebor", "R Wood" and as "G. Day", as well as not signing at all. Watch for these! They are usually cheaper than the Robert Woods.
